Invitation Cover 2003
Central Washington University, Music Dept Chairman recognized for his participation in musical theater and his continuing dedication to the arts.
Letter of Nomination:
The Board of the Laughing Horse Arts Foundation enthusiastically nominates Peter Gries for the award of City Arts Treasure.
Hal Ott, professor of music at CWU, first suggested that we nominate Peter Gries, noting that "...since his arrival here in the 1970s Peter has been very active in the arts world in Ellensburg - far beyond his responsibilities as chair of the Music Department. Whether musically, theatrically, or in the dance arena, he has made this community a better place to live."
In supporting this nomination, Jim Hawkins, last year's Art Treasure, wrote, "I've directed him in three plays (Peter Pan, A Christmas Carol, The Toby Show) and he was excellent in all three - his Captain Hook was "world class"! His community work is excellent, and has done volunteer work through his church and other commissions and organizations. He has also been instrumental in bringing outside arts groups to the valley."
Paulette Bond, Instructor in the CWU Theatre Department, wrote, "I, too, have worked with Peter on many projects, Pirates of Penzance, A Little Night Music, and many others. It would be great for us to support his nomination!"
Cathy Gibb, a frequent participant in musical theatre productions, wrote, "Peter is the type of "renaissance man" that exemplifies this award. He spends so much of his time encouraging others in the arts as well as participating in artistic endeavors himself that the award would be well-deserved."
In short the Laughing Horse board members who know him best and those of us who simply know him as an excellent performer believe that he truly is a treasure whose contribution to the community should be acknowledged by this wonderful award.
Sincerely,
Becky Craig
